Anti-Aging
GLUTATHIONE AND AGING
The involvement of glutathione in aging has been known for quite some time. It is one of the most important elements of the “anti-oxidant defense system" and has been called "the master antioxidant”. Aging is characterized by a decline in physiological performance in many organs. Recent studies have shown that glutathione plays a key role in the protection against free radical damage associated with aging. Antioxidant supplementation may be a way to partially protect against age-associated impairment in performance. Glutathione precursors prevent, or at least delay, programmed cell death. Glutathione deficiency contributes to oxidative stress, which plays a key role in aging and many diseases (including, seizure, Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, liver disease, cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia, HIV, AIDS, cancer, heart attack, stroke, and diabetes). Knowledge of the nutritional regulation of glutathione is vital for the development of effective strategies to improve health.
