What are Free Radicals and Why Should We Worry About Them?

by drvic on January 15, 2009

Our bodies are natural sources of free radicals. Free radicals fight the balance that tries to exist in our bodies at the cellular level.  When free radicals are not held in check oxidative stress in placed on the cells of our body. This stress on the oxidative system plays a key role in aging, joint pain  and the many disease states such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, seizure disorder, cancer, heart attack, stroke and diabetes to name a few.

Antioxidants are our defense mechanism against free radicals.  There are antioxidants supplied by fruits and vegetables in our diet.  There are antioxidants which naturally occurs in our bodies:

1.  Super Oxide Dismutase(SOD)

Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) is an enzyme that repairs cells and reduces the damage done to them by superoxide, the most common free radical in the body. SOD is found in both the dermis and the epidermis, and is key to the production of healthy fibroblasts (skin-building cells). Studies have shown that SOD acts as both an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory in the body,  neutralizing the free radicals that can lead to wrinkles and precancerous cell changes. Researchers are currently studying the potential of superoxide dismutase as an anti-aging
treatment, since it is now known that SOD levels drop while free radical levels increase as we age.

2.  Catalase

Hydrogen peroxide is a harmful by-product of many normal metabolic processes: To prevent damage, it must be quickly converted into other, less dangerous substances. To this end, catalase is frequently used by cells to rapidly catalyze the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into less reactive gaseous oxygen and water molecules.

3.  l-glutathione

Glutathione is a compound found in living organisms and serves a vital role in maintaining health.Glutathione is the predominant non-protein thiol and is a powerful antioxidant.  Glutathione is a dominant anti-oxidant enzyme that is water soluble. It is absorbed mostly in the liver. It helps to fight free radical damage. Free radical damage is harmful to ones health. L- Glutathione is involved in a variety of other functions within the body.

Our bodies face constant stress on a daily basis from diseases, our environment, our jobs and life in general.  This in turn stresses our oxidative system and the free radical balance.  It is extremely important to not allow our bodies to become depleted of these vital antioxidants.  A healthy diet of fruits and vegetables is a great start.  Our fast paced, high stress society sometimes makes it difficult to do what is necessary to maintain a healthy balance of these vital antioxidants.  In those instances, supplements can be considered to support the vital body systems.  I have researched several and have concluded that the combination of Max GXL and Max N-Fuze are very effective in meeting the needs of our bodies.
